Introduction to Substance Use Disorders & Medication-Assisted Treatment
This module provides an overview of the epidemiology and public health impact of substance use disorders. After describing clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for mild, moderate, and severe substance use disorders, the speaker discusses how medication assisted treatment (MAT) can be used in conjunction with behavioral treatments to improve health outcomes for people living with a substance use disorder. Emphasis is placed on the efficacy of using medications to treat opioid use disorders and destigmatizing this form of treatment.

Learning Objectives
Define Substance Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder and describe the presentation of DSM-V clinical criteria for diagnosis of a substance use disorder.
Define Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), list the medications approved by the FDA for use to treat SUDs, and describe the basic pharmacology of these medications.
Describe how the unique properties and safety profiles of these medications contribute to their preferred use to treat substance use disorders, with an emphasis on Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD).
Dr. Dubin is a double board certified physician (Family Medicine & Addiction Medicine) that teaches locally, nationally, and internationally in the field of Addiction Medicine. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and Clinical Faculty Adjunct at Rocky Vista College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVCOM). He is a past member of the Opioid Advisory Panel in the Office of Behavioral Health for the state of Colorado and currently serves as Chief Medical Education Officer at Porch Light Health, formerly known as Front Range Clinic, which is Colorado's largest network of outpatient treatment centers. Dr. Dubin is also an official U.S. Ski Team Physician, a NAUI Scuba Instructor and proud Dad to his 2 kids and lives in Fort Collins, CO.
