Anatomy of an Inpatient Addiction Consultation

This module describes the components of an inpatient addiction consultation in a hospital setting and teaches clinicians how to create admission plans for inpatient SUD treatment. Steps to advocate for creating a consult program and implementing innovative hospital strategies are discussed.

Dale Terasaki, MD, MPH is an internist and addiction medicine specialist at Denver Health, where he provides addiction consultations and supervises trainees in the hospital setting. He is an assistant professor through the University of Colorado School of Medicine and serves as a faculty member for the addiction medicine fellowship. A Colorado Health Service Corps awardee, Dr. Terasaki is focused on providing and improving substance use disorder care in urban, underserved settings. His research includes investigating novel interventions (including ketamine therapy) for alcohol and other substance use disorders in the hospital setting, and he has published articles on buprenorphine inductions, alcohol pharmacotherapy, and inpatient consultations. He earned his medical and public health degrees from the University of Washington and completed residency and fellowship training at the University of Colorado.

Susan Calcaterra, MD, MPH, MS is an Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Colorado. She is the Director of the Addiction Consultation Service at University of Colorado Hospital. Clinically, she is a practicing hospitalist and also provides hospital-based addiction treatment. Her research focus includes understanding, developing, and implementing interventions aimed to expand hospital-based addiction treatment by empowering hospitalists to provide this life saving care and supporting care linkage from the hospital to community addiction treatment resources. She is a co-editor of the Journal of Addiction Medicine where she has the privilege of reviewing interesting and creative addiction-focused research.  A highlight of Dr. Calcaterra’s career has been learning and working alongside colleagues who are passionate about improving health care provided to people who use drugs.
