Opioids: An Objective Look at the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of One of Medicine's Most Utilized Drugs

Description:

Opioids are one of medicine’s oldest and most widely used medications. In this sweeping review of opioid literature and practice patterns, Dr. Stader reviews the history of opioids in medical practice and the various opioid epidemics that have occurred over the course of medical history. In the context of the current opioid crisis, the lecture reviews the current medical evidence for opioids, investigating when opioids have proven benefit, when opioids have proven harms and how to integrate the current science into medical practice. While opioids continue to be a useful drug for many conditions, the requirement for clinicians to have a deep knowledge of the indications and be able to recognize opioid risks has never been more urgent.
