This module provides an overview of the epidemiology and public health impact of substance use disorders. After describing clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for mild, moderate, and severe substance use disorders, the speaker discusses how medication assisted treatment (MAT) can be used in conjunction with behavioral treatments to improve health outcomes for people living with a substance use disorder. Emphasis is placed on the efficacy of using medications to treat opioid use disorders and destigmatizing this form of treatment.

The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention’s Provider Education Work Group seeks to engage and educate a broad range of health care providers across Colorado. More specifically, the goal of the work group is to increase knowledge around pain management, safe opioid prescribing, and substance use disorder treatment by using a variety of educational tools. On this page, you will find links to numerous training modules developed by the Consortium. The modules last up to an hour, can be completed at your convenience, and are eligible for Continuing Medical Education credits. CoBank has been a generous sponsor for this work.
